Inspired by the creativity of late Keys artist Stanley Papio, the Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade transforms Duval Street into a colorful celebration of human-powered art, performance, and island eccentricity.

Project details

Inspired by the long-running tradition of kinetic sculpture races that began in California in 1969, the Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade brings a uniquely Key West interpretation to the world of human-powered art and engineering. Launched in 2016 by the Key West Art & Historical Society, the event was shaped by the island’s laid-back spirit, artistic independence, and love of bicycles, replacing the competitive “race” format with a more community-driven celebration of creativity and spectacle. Named in honor of late Keys artist Stanley Papio—known for his whimsical metal sculptures and inventive use of recycled materials—the parade reflects his unconventional approach to art and life. Artists, builders, and makers spend months designing and constructing elaborate kinetic sculptures and art bikes that travel the length of Duval Street, blending visual art, movement, performance, costumes, and engineering into an immersive public experience that celebrates imagination, collaboration, and the eccentric spirit of Key West.
